HISTORY

This history of the Tualatin Hills Barracudas Swim Club was compiled primarily from files maintained by Sandi Rousseau and Pat Caudill, both founding members.

Conversations with Sandi and Pat and with Coach Ben Davis before he left the area in June, 1998, also were helpful. It is an open-ended project. Contributions, such as anecdotal memories and additional information, from other members will continue to be sought and added. Certain records that are relevant to the early history are available as an appendix. An asterisk in the text indicates the presence of information found in the appendix.

1981: Formation
Officially, the Tualatin Hills Barracudas Swim Club came into being on December 9, 1981, when it was sanctioned by the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District Board of Directors. There had been a gestation period, however, during which the desire for the club evolved into a plan with a supporting argument that could be presented to the THPRD Board. This was a time of a growing interest in swimming generally, the result of college team competitions, age-group swimming, and increased awareness of the benefits of physical fitness. In Oregon, adult competitive swimming was gaining impetus for these reasons and from the formation of Oregon Masters Swimming in 1972. Former age-group and college swimmers plus serious fitness swimmers were the nucleus of the club that became the Barracudas but began in 1977 as the Tualatin Hills Masters Swim Club. According to a report by Art Smith, THMSC president in 1981, “Our club was formed as a lap swim program in 1971 and was reorganized in the present competitive lines in 1977. ....As a club we’re over 100 strong with a consistency ranging from nine top-ten national swimmers to the beginner struggling through their first months in the pool.” (“Off the Blocks,” THMSC newsletter, 1981) *(THMSC application brochure)

When the 50-meter pool at Walker Road and 158th Avenue opened in 1979 as part of a publicly funded recreation center, the THMSC moved from the Beaverton pool to the new pool. Membership grew rapidly and the club was given dedicated lanes for morning and noon-time workouts. With the increased membership came more opinions and interests concerning the club’s focus. Dissension arose between those who wanted to align themselves with other Masters groups, to obtain regular coaching, and to participate, both as swimmers and sponsors, in U.S. Masters meets and those who preferred less structure and opposed coached workouts. In the late fall of 1981, after efforts for accommodation within the club reached an impasse, about a half-dozen club members began the process of separating from the THMSC.

Since there is no written record of the informal meetings and discussions leading up to the request for recognition and approval at the THPRD Board meeting on December 9th, that part of the story must be constructed from minutes of the organizational meeting held the next day, December 10, 1981, *(Organizational meeting minutes) and from charter members’ recollections. The organizing group, who became the first officers, were:

Vern Dasch, President
Barb Klencke, Vice-president
Sandi Rousseau, Secretary
Pat Caudill, Treasurer
Brett Arvidson, Member at Large
Mike Horodyski, Social Committee

Brian and Barbara Frid also were active. (They were the founders and owners of The Swim Cellar, the first shop in the area to specialize in swimwear and equipment for competition swimmers.)
When asked about the choice of the name “Barracudas,” Sandi Rousseau said that the association with fast fish was the primary consideration, although the fact that the company which produces swim goggles under the name “Barracuda,” is located in Portland suggested the possibility of a supportive connection. (This has never materialized, however.) Pat Caudill, the first treasurer, remembers that he established a bank account for the fledgling club with $300 of his own money.
The main order of business at the first meeting was to establish workout times and to hire a coach. Alan Cardwell, the Tualatin Hills Swim Club (age-group) head coach, agreed to coach the Barracudas at the salary of $10.00 per hour. Members’ fees for the workouts were set at $15.00 per month. Club dues were $12.00 per year.

1982
Coached workouts actually began on January 4, 1982, and subsequently took place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. (soon changed to 6-7:30 a.m., thus beginning the hour-and-a-half workouts). Brian Frid, who had represented the petitioning group at the THPRD Board meeting, reported that there was “overwhelming support (by the Board) for the formation of the Barracudas. Sandi Rousseau will write a letter of thanks to Judy Zamora and Peg Ogilbee (aquatics staff), both of whom have been very helpful to the club.” (Minutes, THB Organizational Meeting, December 10, 1981)

The 1982 roster shows forty members. *(1982 roster) The first clinic was held on June 6th and an invitation from Oregon Masters to host the short course regional championship meet in April, 1983, was accepted. A logo, the “fast fish,” was developed by Nancy Olson and soon appeared on T-shirts, caps, and towels. Pat Caudill produced an information hand-out and an application for membership. The first of what have become annual Halloween bonfire social events at Sandi and Tom Rousseau’s home was held on October 30th. Participation in the National Swimathon on November 6th raised more than $424, with 15% donated to the American Cancer Society, 10% to United States Swimming, and the remainder to the Tualatin Hills Swim Club for application toward video-taping equipment.

A general membership meeting was held on December 6, 1982, almost a year to the day of the official formation. Of the forty members, eighteen attended to celebrate the anniversary and to plan ahead. Pat Caudill, the treasurer, reported a balance of $1279.96 with $650 outstanding for coaching salary. A budget of $3580 was projected for 1983. The largest planned expenditure was $2800 coaching salary; however, it should be noted that another priority, accounted for in the amount of $100, was the next best thing to swimming--parties! New officers were elected:

Sandi Rousseau, President
Pat Caudill, Vice-President
Judy Belford, Secretary
Jim Anderson, Treasurer
Bill Fuegy, Member at Large

After discussions concerning the upcoming short course regional meet, clinics, and the purchase of one dozen pull buoys ($30) to be donated to the Park District, the meeting was adjourned and attendees settled down to refreshments while watching the videotaping of the June, 1982, clinic.
In their first participation in the State Association meet the Barracudas won the state championship. As part of Oregon Masters, Barracudas helped win the women’s U.S. National team title and the U.S. National combined team title for men and women at the 1982 Long Course Championship meet held at Mt. Hood Community College in August.

In their first year of swimming, work, and commitment, the Barracudas proved the viability of their goals for a masters swim club and prepared the groundwork for growth and success.

1983
The year began with a $1,665.55 bank account. At the January board meeting several important actions were taken: Alan Cardwell’s salary was increased to include 60% of the surplus over 16 paid swimmers per month. Three committees were set up: the meet committee, headed by V.P. Pat Caudill, the social committee, headed by Brett Arvidson, and the nominating committee, Dave Clark. It was decided, also, to publish a quarterly newsletter.

In April the Barracudas sponsored a regional short course meet which included a post-meet banquet at the Rock Creek Country Club. Another “first” occurred in June with a combined stroke analysis clinic and incorporation meeting. Articles of incorporation prepared by the club’s attorney member, Roy Lambert, were approved unanimously. In September a highly successful wine tasting tour and a bonfire party on the 29th of October extended camaraderie beyond the pool and dressing rooms.

Won the state championship. *(Membership application brochure with picture of “1983 state champs”). New officers elected for the coming year were Pat Caudill, president, Doug Hunsicker, vice-president, Roy Lambert, treasurer, Kathy Hughes, secretary, and Dave Clarke, member-at-large.

1984
Morning workouts on Tuesday and Thursday were added in February making workouts available Monday through Friday. The Internal Revenue Service confirmed the club’s 501 status, exempting it from federal and state income taxes. CPR training at the Harmon pool with Peg Ogilbee, supervisor of aquatics, THPRD, and Margaret Wylie, head guard, as instructors was sponsored and promoted. The club donated two dozen swim buoys to the swim center. Several Barracudas went to North Carolina for the long course nationals. Ginger Pierson won first in the 50 breast and in the 200 breast. Barbara Frid won first in the 50 fly. Won the state championship. Social events: A cross country ski trip in March, a progressive potluck dinner in September, and the annual bonfire party in October.

1985
Officers: President, Doug Hunsicker; Vice-president, Darlene Pohl; Treasurer, Roy Lambert; Secretary, Tim Muddowney; At large, Susan Albright. The roster published in August shows 65 members. A pentathlon meet, which became an annual event, took place at the Rec Center pool, the club’s home pool, in January. A swim-a-thon in June raised $1,037 which was used to buy equipment for the new weight room, which opened in May, at the Rec Center. In July a farewell party at Vancouver Lake honored departing coach Alan Cardwell. In September Ben Davis arrived from High Point, North Carolina, to become head coach for THSC and the Barracudas. Ben swam and coached under Don Gambril (six times an Olympic coach) at the University of Alabama. After graduating with a degree in public relations, he worked for three years at High Point as an age group coach before coming to Beaverton.Won the state championship. Social events were highlighted by a September weekend camping trip to Cape Lookout State Park.

1986
Officers: President, Roy Lambert; vice-president, Dan Johnson; Treasurer, Ginger Pierson; Secretary, Creighton Willis; at-large, Sara Running--the at-large member to be responsible for the newsletter. A new board post was established officially: social chairman, Doug Hunsicker. April roster: 68 members. A clinic on start, stroke, turn, and timing was held in April. Pam Himstreet set up the “Barracudas General Store” with short sleeve T-shirts at $5, Long sleeve at $8, polo shirts at $13, sweatshirts with crew neck, $15, with hooded neck, $16.50, and swim caps at $1.75. Won the state championship. Social events: Devil’s Peak hike in August, September camping trip, October bonfire party, and December Christmas party.

1987
Officers: President, Dan Johnson; vice-president, Mark Becker; treasurer, Ginger Pierson; secretary, Ginny Ross; at-large, Monika Hunscher; social chairman, Doug Hunsicker. March roster: 53 members. Hosted the Oregon state meet in April. Authorized $280 for purchase in combination with THSC a VCR underwater camera case and cable. In November, the new video taping equipment was used for a clinic and critique by Ben. Won the state championship. Social events: Coach Ben Davis’ and Barracuda Lisa King’s marriage! Also, an overnight party at Hunsicker home, bonfire Halloween party, and Christmas party.

1988
Officers: President, Mark Becker; vice-president, Jed Cronin; Treasurer, Monika Hunsher; secretary, Ginny Ross; at-large, Leslie Winton. January roster: 42. Important decisions made at February board meeting: Coaching fee was raised from $15 to $20 to cover inflation plus increased hours. All Barracudas must be members of U.S. Masters/Oregon Masters for insurance purposes. Because of concern over the drop in membership, a new brochure will be produced to help with recruiting efforts. Announcement that Ginger Pierson is moving to Iowa and that a farewell party will be held on June 17th at Sandi and Tom Rousseau’s home. Video clinics with Ben at Rec Center pool in May and November. The by-laws and constitution were amended to read: Club year will coincide with U.S.M.S. year (Nov. 1 to Oct. 31), U.S.M.S. annual registration fee to be collected at same time as club dues, then forwarded to U.S.M.S. Annual club meeting to be held in September. The Swim Cellar sponsored the Pentathlon on December 3rd. Won the state championship. The Christmas party featured a workout from 8:30 til 10, followed by a champagne brunch at Nendel’s Inn.

1989
Officers: President, Jed Cronin; vice-president, Pam Himstreet; treasurer, Monika Hunscher; secretary, Leslie Winton; at-large, Fred Poujade. Roster (February): 57 members. Hosted Master’s Region XII championships on April 21, 22, 23. The project required the help of nearly all Barracudas, their spouses, teenage children, and friends. In September the U.S. Swimming convention was held in Portland, and that, too, required Barracuda volunteer helpers. Won the state championship. Social events: Breakfast on June 24 at Monika Hunscher’s home, dinner at Harborside restaurant on July 29, beach trip September 29-October 1, and bonfire, October 28.

1990
Officers: President, Pam Himstreet; vice-president, Julie Sheppard; treasurer, David Dotter; secretary/newsletter, Leslie Winton, social chairman, Carol Dickinson. Roster (July): 62 members. The club sponsored the master’s regional meet on August 3,4, and 5. Members worked as timers, hospitality providers, sales, and wherever needed. (No record in files on a post-meet report.) Ben was selected as a coach of the “East Team” of the U.S. Olympic Festival, July 8, 9, 10. According to the Barracuda newsletter for summer, it is a high honor, like making the big time in the coaching hierarchy. Won the state championship. Summer social events included a ladies’ brunch on July 15th, a bar-b-que on July 27th, and a golf party.

1991
Officers: President, Lisa Davis; vice-president, Lisa Davis; treasurer, David Dotter; secretary, Tina Wong; at-large, Susan Albright. Roster (April): 64 members. Because the Rec Center pool was closed from May 25th to June 23rd, workouts were scheduled at the Raleigh Park outdoor heated pool from 5:30 a.m. to 7: a.m. Also because of the closure, a masters meet sponsored by the club, which had been scheduled for June, had to be canceled. Won the state championship. The social events were highlighted by a strawberry waffle brunch on June 9th at Monika Hunscher’s home.

1992
Officers: President, Sandi Rousseau; vice-president, Lisa Davis; secretary, Gracie Goddard; social chairman, Toni Hecksel; at-large, Jim Goddard. Roster (November): 68 . Members. The problem of delinquent payments brought about discussion and a decision: After three months of non-payment, the delinquent swimmer cannot participate in workouts until the debt is paid in full. At the long course nationals at Federal Way, Oregon Masters fielded a notable relay in which Roy Lambert was awarded a “relay king” title by his fellow swimmers. Roy swam the first leg of the men’s 200 freestyle relay, then couldn’t locate the relay anchor. He asked a nearby official if a double swim would be legal. Without enough time for a response, he dove into the pool and was on his way. Despite his all-out but much appreciated effort, the relay team was disqualified.

A team meeting was held in conjunction with the workout on October 12th. Ben spoke about his general workout plan for the short course season, about weight training, stretching, etc. On October 31st, he conducted a stroke clinic which was followed by a pizza party. In November the board agreed to donate $2,000 to THPRD for weight room equipment. At the same meeting, it was decided to sponsor a membership for Ben in the Master’s Aquatic Coaches Association.

For the first time since they began competing, the Barracudas lost the state championship. Portland Parks Masters won. Social events: In April, a get-together at Jenkins Road McMenamin’s, in May a picnic at the Goddards’ home, in June a strawberry waffle brunch at Monika Hunscher’s home, in September a weekend in a large beach house in Long Beach, Washington (some traveled to it by bicycle), and in December a Christmas party at which three newly married Barracudas--Roy Lambert, Scott Woodbury, and Brooks McCartney--and their spouses were feted.

1993
Officers: President, Sandi Rousseau; vice-president, Peter Jensen; treasurer, Jim Goddard; secretary, Gracie Goddard; at-large, Judy Beaston; social, Toni Hecksel. Roster: 59 members. The March newsletter contains a “nag list:” “1. There are too many latecomers for the a.m. workout. It’s annoying! Get up or stay out! 2. Put away equipment--kickboards, etc. Coach is paid to coach, not to clean up. 3. If you must spit, spit in the gutter and do it quietly. 4. Pay attention on Wednesday mornings when Ben makes announcements.” Long course regional again held at Rec Center pool. In October the board approved a workout expansion to include midday workouts, Mon.-Fri., 12:30 - 1:30, at the 50 meter pool. Chris Perret was hired as assistant coach and will coach at the midday workout. Won the state championship. Social: Pub crawl in March, a wine tasting tour in June, the bonfire on October 30, and a Christmas brunch on December 19th at Hometown Buffet.

1994
Officers: President, Gracie Goddard; vice-president, Jeanne Teisher, treasurer, Judy Beaston; secretary, Kristi Riddle; at-large, a.m., Jed Cronin, noon, Vlad Drobny; social, Jon Schieltz. Roster: 77 members. Pentathlon held on January 5th. Evaluation forms for Ben’s and Chris’s performance were distributed to members in February. In March swimmers enjoyed a swim and ski weekend in Bend in connection with a short course meters meet. The by-laws were changed in August to reflect growth: Authorized were two daily workouts and additions to the board of social chairman, at-large member, and aquatic advisory committee delegate. Also, the term of office was changed to Sept. 1 - Aug. 31.

A team swim suit was adopted. The women’s suit is black with a white diagonal stripe containing a turquoise barracuda image; men’s is also black with a turquoise barracuda in upper right. Backs of both feature a turquoise barracuda with “Barracudas” printed in white below the fish. Ben and Chris held a clinic on October 15th. In November members were asked to fill out a goal sheet for the coming year. Board voted to send Ben and Chris to the 1995 American Coaches Clinic. Won the state championship. Social events: Summer party on July 16th at the Goddards’ home; a weekend camping trip to Nehalem in September, the bonfire at the Rousseau home in October, a Christmas buffet brunch at Hometown Buffet on December 18th.

1995
Officers: President, Jon Schieltz; vice-president, Jeanne Teisher; Treasurer, Judy Beaston; secretary, Kristi Riddle; social chairman, Vlad Drobny; at-large, Michelle Brown, aquatics advisory rep, Dan Johnson. Roster (December): 127. The pentathlon on Jan. 21st attracted 120 swimmers. On Jan. 29th the entire pool was used for a postal meet which was a benefit for Aaron Paulson. Judy Beaston, the treasurer, reported at the January board meeting that 50% of members hadn’t yet paid their club dues. In addition, she’s obliged to send about 20 notices of past-due coaching fees each month, a situation that costs the club money and the treasurer, time.

The Northwest zone meet was held at the Rec Center April 28-30 and was a success although there weren’t enough timers and lap counters. The national long course meet was held at Mt. Hood Community College in August with Barracudas assisting state Oregon Master members with arrangements and duties at the meet. Coaches reported that 21 to 36 swimmers attend morning workouts and 7 to 23 attend noon workouts. Thirty swimmers participated in the fall video clinic. Won the state championship. Social events: Chris organized a bike riding outing in Forest Park in May, the summer picnic took place at Jon Schieltz’s home on August 20, a camping weekend at Nehalem Bay State Park Oct. 7th and 8th, the annual bonfire party, and the December brunch at Hometown Buffet.

1996
Officers: Jon Schieltz, vice-president, Jeanne Teisher; treasurer, Judy Beaston; secretary, Kristi Riddle; social (vacant); at-large, Michelle Brown; aquatics adv., Dan Johnson.

Roster (May) 123 members. Two new board positions were announced: Sunshine chairman (Judy Melcher) will send cards of remembrance on members’ birthdays and other important occasions. Historian (Lois Allan) will document and maintain a history of the club.

The Pentathlon, scheduled for Jan 27th, had to be canceled because of snow. It was rescheduled for April 26th. At the April board meeting, Chris reported that he has created a web page for the Barracudas. Sandi Rousseau announced that the World Games, with Nike as the primary sponsor, will be held in Portland in August 1998. She is the swimming commissioner and will coordinate the activities and responsibilities of Oregon Masters Swimming and the World Games organizers in putting on the swimming competition at Mt. Hood C.C. The long course zone meet at Mt. Hood C.C. on June 22nd was poorly attended because of a scheduling glitch--too many conflicts. It was decided to sponsor one meet only--the pentathlon--next year. Eleven Barracudas swam in the short course nationals in Cupertino, California, in June.

On November 21st, the club hosted a coaches and swimmers clinic organized by Assistant Coach Chris Perret. Three prominent coaches from California, Ron "Sickie" Marcikic , Roch Frey, and Mike Collins, led morning discussions for coaches on planning, coaching style, program building, etc. The afternoon session, for swimmers, was attended by 65 swimmers. The visiting coaches plus Ben and Chris were on deck for instructions and critiques. An analysis after the clinic’s end showed the necessity for limiting the number of swimmers and for spreading the clinic over two days. Both THB coaches reported that they saw improvement in the participants’ swimming as a result of the clinic, especially in an improved body position and a longer stroke length.

After much discussion that carried over through several board meetings, a proposal to form an independent club (separate from Oregon Masters Swimming) was shelved. The issue came up in relation to relays at the major meets. Some members wanted to swim with and be identified with the Barracudas. Some preferred the flexibility and expanded field in being able to draw on O.M.S. for relay teams. Most, however, had no strong opinion one way or the other.

In December Jason Hardy was hired to coach at the midday workout on the days Chris couldn’t be there. Also, at the December board meeting discussions began on how to cope with the serious impact Measure 47 (tax limitation) will have on the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District and on Barracuda activities and use of the pool. Won the state championship. Social events: Summer get-together on August 14th at the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse Pub, December brunch on the 21st at Tom’s Pancake House, Beaverton.

1997
Officers: President, Jeanne Teisher; vice-president, Ed Ramsey; treasurer, Judy Beaston; secretary, Kristi Riddle; at-large, Tracy Morris; social chairman, Jed Cronin; aquatics comm. rep, Jon Schieltz; Oregon Masters rep, Sandi Rousseau, sunshine chairman, Judy Melcher; historian, Lois Allan. Roster (March): 97.

Pentathlon took place on Jan. 18th. The board is in the process of negotiating with THPRD on the cutbacks needed to accommodate Measure 47 budget losses. Delayed openings, reduced lap-swim hours, program cuts, usage fees for clubs, increase in annual membership fees are all being considered. Skyline Northwest, makers of Barracuda swim gear, asked permission to invite Barracudas to test their goggles and possibly, other products. Permission granted. President Jeanne Teisher took a survey of club members to determine what sports are favored--other than swimming. The results: Thirty-nine people responded. 72% cross train, with the largest number--62%--lifting weights. Biking, running, soccer, tennis, and walking, in that order, were also mentioned.

The board agreed to THPRD financial proposals: 1. The district subsidy, amounting to $652 per annum, is canceled. 2. Aquatics clubs will reimburse district for expenses accrued for special events, i.e., meets such as the pentathlon. 3. The District will either cease service or charge for payroll responsibility. Chris announced that he can no longer coach the midday workout because of increased job responsibilities. Ben will fill in until a new coach can be found.

Twenty-one swimmers registered for the national short course meet at Federal Way in June. A block of motel rooms has been reserved. Two Oregon relay teams broke records at the meet: men’s 200 free relay, age 75 + (2:19.15) and mixed 200 free relay, age 35 + (1:34.08), although an east coast team, the Colonials “1776,” came in at 1:33.86, setting the new record time to beat. Jon Schieltz both swam and officiated. At the Cascades Lakes open swim on Aug. 2 and 3, four Barracudas (Dave Radcliff, Toni Hecksel, Judy Beaston, Chris Lindstrom) took 12 firsts in 12 races, coming in second in team standings.

In October evening workouts commenced: M,Tues,Th, 6:00-7:00 with Chris on deck. For the second time in Barracuda history, lost the state champion to Portland Parks Masters. Social events: Dinner at Olive Garden restaurant in Beaverton on April 18th, a wedding shower for Coach Chris and his Barracuda bride, Christy Ryerson, on August 21st in Sandi and Tom Rousseau’s garden.

1998
President, Jeanne Teisher, V.P., Ed Ramsey, Treas., Judy Beaston; Secretary, Kristi Riddle. All board members continue. Roster (May): 119 (Dec.): 132. Budget for 1998: $37,545. Rhoda Crowe replaced Chris as coach at the evening workouts about the first of the year. Jason Hardy resigned and a search for a new assistant coach began. In March Jane Samuels arrived in Portland and soon became Assistant Coach. Prior to her position here she coached for the Davis (California) Aquatic Masters. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, she has swum competitively since high school, and in 1988 qualified for the NCAA and Olympic Trials in breaststroke. When Jane found that coaching both mid-day and evening practices was overtaxing her time and energy, Bryan Addleman was hired as a temporary coach to take evenings and one mid-day practice per week during the summer. A policy with reference to Barracudas in arrears was adopted: If a swimmer is one month overdue on club dues he/she cannot swim. Three months of nonpayment of coaching fees also eliminates participation in workouts.

The annual association meet was held in early April in Corvallis, and the Barracudas regained their No. 1 status in the large team division. In May Coach Ben Davis announced his resignation effective June 15th. His new position is in Birmingham, Alabama, as coach for the Birmingham Swim League. Gary Leach, the THSC head coach, agreed to fill in as the Barracudas coach until the summer break beginning August 10. He will be on deck mornings and evenings; Jane will continue at noon. A search committee consisting of President Jeanne Teisher, Kristi Riddle, Sandi Rousseau, Dave Radcliff, Darlene Staley, and Tiger Winkle was appointed to recruit a new permanent coach. They began immediately to look at options, i.e., sharing a coach with the THSC, part-time or full-time employment; they are to review the job description, determine salary offering, and place an ad on the internet and in swim publications. When the THSC determined that it wasn’t in their best interest to share a coach, the committee focused on finding a full-time coach who was experienced in and enthusiastic about masters programs.

Headline on the July/August Barracuda newsletter: BILL VOLCKENING - NEW THB HEAD COACH. A lifelong--32 years--New Jersey resident, Bill visited Portland in early August, was interviewed by the search committee, attended a board meeting, and led both a morning and a mid-day workout, after which he was offered--and accepted--the coaching position. His background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in photography and a Masters degree (MFA) in studio art, experience in desk top publishing, coaching age-group swimmers, membership in U.S. Masters and participation in nine USMS National Championships, competing in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, individual medley, and relay events. The contract agreed to by Bill and the Board specifies that he will be responsible for morning, mid-day, and evening workouts. For the first time the Barracuda contract with a coach includes a probationary period of six months with two evaluations, the first at three months and the second at six months. An evaluation committee consisting of President Jeanne Teisher, Sandi Rousseau, Judy Beaston, Lois Allan, and Shane Spell is to meet with Bill after three three months and again at six months.

Sandi Rousseau was much in evidence before and during the Nike World Games held in August as Swimming Commissioner, which means that she headed up the administration of the swimming competition. The swimming competition was organized and run by Oregon Masters Swimming and was held at the Mt. Hood Community College’s beautiful outdoor, 50 meter pool. Twenty Barracudas competed and others worked behind the scenes. Oregon Masters was represented by 121 swimmers in all.

In September Bill arrived and Jane Samuels resigned. Bill took over coaching duties for morning, mid-day, and evening workouts. He also competed with Barracudas for the first time, swimming in the Hagg Lake Open Water Swim. Dave Radcliff shocked everyone, including himself, by going home after Bill’s first workout and having a heart attack. (After a few weeks recuperation from angioplasty Dave was back in the swim, literally as well as figuratively.) It was later divulged that Dave had a family history of heart conditions, and it was not caused by Bill's challenging workout.
October was highlighted by our participation in the USMS 3000 yd. and 6000 yd. postal swim at the Rec Center pool and the annual Halloween Bonfire party at Sandi and Tom Rousseau’s home. In November, the evaluation committee met with Bill after all Barracudas had the opportunity to assess his performance by sending e-mail or telephoning Jeanne. The overwhelming majority felt that he was doing a great job.

Bill was appointed to the USMS Coaches Committee. He has also taken over and greatly improved the production of the Barracuda Newsletter. December: Suzanne Rague was elected president of Oregon Masters and Jeanne Teisher took over the Treasurer’s job, filling in for Roy Abramowitz who is at OHSU hospital waiting for a heart transplant. Monika Hunscher volunteered to serve as Webmaster for OMS.

A NIKE Champions Clinic, organized by Bill, was held at the Rec. Center Pool on December 13th. Olympic Gold Medalist Anita Nall spoke for about two hours then led a workout focusing on breaststroke drills and technique. About forty swimmers participated, making it the largest NIKE Champions Clinic ever.

Jon Schieltz, the Barracuda representative on the Aquatics Advisory Committee, reported to the board that THPRD expects to raise rates for out-of-district pool memberships by 100% in 1999. This will affect about fifty Barracuda members who reside out of the district. More financial impact: New coaching fees were adopted to begin in January, 1999. The monthly coaching fee of $30 ($25 for “honored” members, i. e., over 65 years old) will be paid each month for the entire year rather than skipping the month of August. Also punch cards are now available at the cost of $45 for ten workouts. This policy was initiated in order to accommodate swimmers whose schedules don’t permit regular or frequent attendance.

The December board meeting featured a discussion, approval, and planning for the February Fitness Challenge, the largest postal fitness swimming event in the world. Bill was asked by Scott Rabalais, the founder of the event and previous organizer, to have the Barracudas host the event.
Impressive news: Announcement of Top Ten times in U.S. Masters competitions included ten Barracudas: Gracie Goddard, Suzanne Rague, Susanne Schumann, Judy Melcher, Sandi Rousseau, John Collins, Chris Roth, Dave Radcliff, Zygmund Kasner, and Earl Walter. (Events and times are listed in the Barracuda Bulletin for November, 1998.) Special events for the year ended with the annual holiday social gathering which combined a workout and a catered brunch at the pool on the morning of December 20th.

1999
Officers: President, Jeanne Teisher; V.P., Ed Ramsey; Treasurer, Judy Beaston; Secretary, Kristi Riddle. 1998 appointed board members continue. Budget: $48,410.00. Membership: 148.
January: The year began with three meets in the first month: Parkrose hosted a meet in Portland on the 10th. A postal dual meet held on January 18th and hosted by the YMCA Indy Swimfit Club, offered many first-time swimmers the opportunity to race in a friendly, supportive environment. The First Annual Superbowl One Hour Swim preceded the game on the 24th. Greg Jablonski won the men's 30-34 age group with 5420 yards. With the previous Board decision that August will no longer be a nonpaying month. A new monthly coached workout fee is $30 except for members over the age of 65 whose monthly rate will be $25.

February: Under Bill's leadership the Barracudas ran the February Fitness Challenge for the first time. Racking up yardage kept the lanes well occupied all month. The Pentathlon, directed by Ed Ramsey, was held on Feb. 6th with 114 entrants. New this year, a longer course--100 individual and 200 I.M. events--was offered in addition to the traditional 50 yd, plus 100 I.M., events. Joaquin Romera broke the OMS record in the men's 50 yd. breaststroke at :28.99. At the Echo Hollow "Animal" meet in Eugene Jeanne Teisher established a new OMS record for her age group in the 100 yd. freestyle at 1:05.53 Workout punch cards at $45 were made available for members whose work and travel schedules preclude frequent attendance, thus making the monthly fee too expensive to be feasible.

March: Ed Ramsey reported to the Board that the Pentathlon not only was well attended, it made a profit of $300 for our treasury. The Barracudas have hosted the Pentathlon every year since 1985. It's now the most popular Masters' meet in the state. Inspired by the need of a recently widowed swimmer, Bill compiled a cookbook, "Food for Thought," from easy-to-prepare recipes volunteered by several Barracudas. Design of a web page has been undertaken by Bill and Shane Spell. Bill prepared designs, and Shane published the updated web site. The State Association Meet was held in Bend, March 19-21. Thirty-three Barracudas, ranging in age from 24 to 78, again won the Championship trophy. Since beginning to participate, in 1980, THB has won seventeen times. During the awards ceremony, Sandi Rousseau was presented with the Service Award and Kristi Riddle with the Spirit Award.

April: Judy Beaston resigned as treasurer; Kristine Lewis agreed to replace her. Kristine and Judy will work together until the August election of officers. Judy notes that with the growth of the club, a new coach who is actively involved in USMS coaching, an increase in direct tracking of income and expenses, and new endeavors such as the February Fitness Challenge, the treasurer's job has become larger and more complex. Dave Radcliff was honored as the Oregon winner of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield "Ageless Hero Volunteer Recognition Award." Bill has advanced from the ASCA (American Swimming Coach Association) Level 3 Masters certification to Level 4.
May: Sandi Rousseau, Chris Roth, and Andrew Holden made the All-American list for individual events. It was the first time ever for Chris and the first time since 1988 for Sandi. Six Barracudas swam in the USMS SCY National Championships in Santa Clara, California. Wally (Andrew) Holden won six events and broke three individual USMS National records in the men's 80-84 age group. In a stunning come-from-behind victory, Sandi won in the 200 yd. Butterfly, earning her first-ever individual National Championship.
June: On June 6th Bill presented a free open water clinic at the THPRD 50 meter pool. There were twenty participants. OMS open water events are increasingly popular and frequent. On June 12th the Barracudas hosted a long course meet at the THPRD 50 meter pool. One hundred seven swimmers from Oregon (25 Barracudas), Washington, and Canada participated. Wally Holden set another amazing record. He now holds the FINA Masters world record in the 80-84 age group for the 100 meter butterfly. The old record was 1:52.37; Wally has now established it at 1:47.88. He also set a new USMS national record for the 50 fly - 42.5. Bill completed the test for ASCA Level 5 Masters certification, and joined a very small group to ever achieve Level 5, which is ASCA's highest rating. The Board presented him with a $1,000 bonus in appreciation for his contributions to the club, many of which were above and beyond duty.

July: Two open OMS water swims attracted a few Barracudas. Four swam in the Applegate Lake swim, July 17-18, and three swam at Elk Lake, July 31-Aug. 1. August: Two more open water swims: The State Championship Meet at Cottage Grove, August 15, had 37 Barracuda participants and Eel Lake, August 28, had three. About 60 people attended the August 29th annual meeting, which was a swim and barbecue party at the home of Social Chairman Ginny Ross. Everyone enjoyed the food, friendship and fun. Officers for the coming year were elected: President, Jeanne Teisher; Vice-President, Ed Ramsey; Treasurer, Kristine Lewis; Secretary, Kristi Riddle. Appointed members remain the same.

August: The USMS Long Course Nationals were held in Minneapolis. Seven Barracudas participated. Sandi Rousseau won the 50 fly (:35.96), setting a new zone and Oregon record. Bill Volckening won the 1500 free. Dave Radcliff's swims in the 50 free (:29.89) and 100 free (1:05.36) were very impressive considering he'd had a heart attack eleven months earlier. Ten Barracudas made the individual National Top Ten SCY list for 1998-1999.

September: The Hagg Lake open water swim, September 12th, attracted five Barracudas. The postal 5K/10K LCM was held at the THPRD 50 meter pool on September 26th. Four Barracudas attended the United States Aquatic Sports (USAS) National Convention in San Diego: Sandi Rousseau, who is Chair of the Championship Committee, Dave Radcliff, the Northwest Zone Chair, Suzanne Rague, Controller, and Coach Bill Volckening, who is coordinator of the USMS On-Deck Coaching Program. Our newsletter, "The Barracuda Bulletin," which Bill produces, was presented the 1999 USMS Newsletter of the Year Award. The Barracudas are the smallest club ever to win the award, and the first to use a "PDF" e-mail delivery system. Bill was also presented with a Special Appointment to the USMS Board of Directors as USMS Editor for SWIM Magazine.

October: A contract was signed that makes the Barracudas the only Masters team in the world to be sponsored by NIKE. The sponsorship will become official in November. A major social event occurred when a group of Barracudas with a few spouses and offspring went to Hawaii to spend a week on Kauai. Jim Teisher's parents made five condominum units available and Jeanne made the travel arrangements. Other than an open water swim and a barbecue picnic on the condominium lawn, the week was unstructured. It was a relaxing and fun-filled experience for all. A free video clinic with Bill at the Sunset pool was held on October 10th. October 17th was the date for the 20th annual Pentathalon. The early date was proposed by Bill as a way to have the event correspond with the Minnesota Masters Postal Pentathlon. The meet was a great success, with close to 100 swimmers participating. The last weekend of the month featured the annual Halloween bonfire party at Sandi Rousseau's home and next day, a 3000/6000 yd Postal meet at the THPRD 50 meter pool. Jody Welborn and Mark Vininski are new members of the OMS Board, Jody as Secretary and Mark as Webmaster. They join six other Barracudas who serve on the OMS Board: Suzanne Rague, President; Jeanne Teisher, treasurer; Dave Radcliff, Newsletter; Earl Walter, Records; Sandi Rousseau, Safety; Murali Krishna, Top Ten Recorder.

November: By mutual agreement the Tualatin Hills Manatees Swim Club (formerly Tualatin Hills Masters) is merging with the Barracudas, to be effective January 1, 2000. The merger ended nearly 19 years of separation since the Barracudas split from THM and started their own club. The new arrangement provides two additional lanes and time (11:30-12:30) for unstructured workouts. Bill will be on deck one day per week to offer stroke and drill help. Dr. Jody Welborn, cardiologist, takes over the Fitness Chair, and will contribute health tips to the Barracuda Newsletter. Announcement of times and places in the 5K/10K Postal National Championship: Jim Teisher, 6th in his age group; Darlene Staley 3rd in hers in the 10K. In the 5K Chris Lindstrom placed 1st, Jody Welborn, 6th; Dennis Olsen, 8th, and Judy Melcher set a USMS record in her age group (75-79). Lindstrom and Melcher joined Greg Jablonski (1-hour swim) as the first three USMS Long Distance All-Americans in the club's history.

December: A very active and successful year wound up on December 18th with a holiday swim and breakfast. A representative from J.D. Pence was in attendance to do fittings for NIKE swim suits.
